In 1910, at the International Socialist Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, German socialist Clara Zetkin proposed the establishment of "International Women's Day" to promote women's awareness of fighting for their rights and participating in social and political activities. On March 19, 1911, the first International Women's Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland.
In 1975, the United Nations officially designated March 8 as International Women's Day, and from this year onwards began organizing International Women's Year activities.
